Oxford University Islamic Society

The Oxford University Islamic Society is one of the largest and most active student societies in the University. Many sectors of society, such as students, academics, policy makers and the media, turn to the intellectual debates and discussions convened in Oxford to shape new norms in any given field. Accordingly, the Oxford University Islamic Society works hard to facilitate the most groundbreaking and necessary discussions that are shaping Muslim intellectual discourse today. Frequently packing out the most celebrated venues in Oxford, recent events have included: a lecture delivered by Tariq Ramadan on Jihad at the world-famous debating society, the Oxford Union; a seminar with Cambridge academic Timothy Winter on polygamy in the home of the world’s most prestigious scholarship, Rhodes House; and a presentation on Islamic Art and Architecture in the oldest museum in Britain, Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum. With a strong sense of duty towards the community and a desire to make positive social contributions, the Oxford University Islamic Society has pioneered a regular series of social initiatives, outreach projects and innumerable charitable endeavours. Further afield, our members are leaders in their academic disciplines and regularly contribute to discussions on contemporary issues in both national television and print media, most recently on BBC’s Newsnight. The society continues to provide an independent platform to allow its members to engage with the wider society and help shape the political landscape around them. It is from this tradition of academic and intellectual excellence, community engagement and concern, and political and social awareness that the Oxford University Islamic Society invites you to engage in the Rethinking Islamic Reform conference.
